I have had the LM 15 degree portafilter 3x basket for about  two months now... it has been heaven...
BUT

Lately I have been feeling overcaffinated.... so much so I had to step back into Rediscovering the Double
It is a blessing...because now I can drink more than three shots without feeling like I am going to go insane....hahaha

after two triples I feel like I am about to go nuts.... If I screw up my cappa or latte with a triple in it just doesn't take the same...hahhaa

AM I THE only 1

My 15 degree PF and triple basket arrive next week...  If you notice that my posts seem to run on and have more typos than usual for me, then you know I have the jitters, too!

After toying with the triple basket for a few months, I've shelved it for awhile.  Not because of jitters but because I like the old Rancilio PF and how it knocks out the puck oh-so-easy.  I do see a difference with the triple (19+ grams versus my usual 16-17) but it isn't earth-shattering.  I wonder if you'll see the same thing when you upgrade to your Lyra (still on the way, right?).  I tried the LM triple on my buddy's Silvia and the difference was more stark than on Valentina.

there is a shop in my area that is well known for its drinks...and I would go there except that they insist on using a triple basket and pulling a shot under 1.5 oz! They do not have singles on the menu, so if you´re like me and enjoy straight espresso, you will never get a proper shot there. It´s just too much jammed into one shot. I have to buy the beans an make it at home. ...one example of the "less is more" philosophy.
But this bar is well known for its drinks none the less. Probably because their lattes taste more like a coffee beverage than milk with a coffee flavor.  And that is a sign that those folks should move on to cappas and then on to espresso.

The triple basket is good for dark style espresso roasts..ya know, when there are less soluables available and you need all the help you can get.

I have a triple basket and usually drink either a straight espresso, machiatto, or an americano. The triple basket, regardless of roast, gives the espresso a fuller flavor in addition to added strength.  I pull my shots the same way they  do--1.5 oz double (ristretto). I however use my double baskes for single shots.

The answer to the shot seeming too strong is to add enough water until it has achieved the strength of the espresso shot you desire. You will be suprised how much better this coffee will tast than a normal single or double. This is what I do when I do not want such a strong shot. Start out by asking for one of their 1.5 oz double shots with 1 oz of water added and work from there. When friends come over and want a cup of coffee--not espresso--I put a double shot of espresso in about 8 oz of water and they are amazed how good the coffee is. They are suprised to find out they just drank two shots of espresso.

The triple filter I use with my Livia-90 holds over 21 oz of coffee. EsspressoDOM is correct when he says that the puck is difficult to knock out. Sometimes depending on roast and getting the correct grind setting, I full the filter half way and tamp lightly and then fill it the rest of the way and tamp in the usual fashion.

I believe the triple basket adds sometihng to a machine like Silvia.... because you are afforded the opportunity to use more grounds....

I also think it has given me more confidence on how to grind correctly and made my doubles and singles better on Silvia.....

I have not been very detailed when it comes to measuring grinds but i do use a measuring scoop....

I like to have mulitple espresso's sometimes rather than a milk drink.... (lactointolerant-soy not a good substitue for me)

so two triples has me shakin' for the morning....

a couple of doubles and I am good for the morning and early afternoon...
