I found my mum's old moka pot in a cupboard today, it hasn't been used in 3-4 years and smelled quite nasty. The aluminum in the bottom seems to have oxidized and produced a lovely turquoise coating, most of which I seem to have managed to scrub off...  Since it's been in disuse for so long, I might as well get it fully cleaned and shiny, and start from scratch with it. How would you recommend I get the rest off of the gunk off? More elbow grease, or is there something quicker?

And yes, I realize it'll take ages to get it seasoned again :)

Turquoise?  Maybe it's copper or brass instead of aluminum?  Though I've never heard of one of those for a moka pot.  Aluminum oxide is a gray color, but copper (and copper alloy) oxide is bluish.

I had an aluminum moka pot and I gave up on it.  The water that remained in the bottom just was unpleasant-smelling; the backwash from the grounds seemed to be the main cause.  As well, I found the gray color unpleasant.  I purchased a stainless steel one and am much happier with it.

There are plenty of metal powder and paste polishes out there that can be used on cooking utensils; I would use one of those.  I have one that is good for aluminum and stainless steel that I use on pots and pans; I would bet that would be fine.  Just be sure to rinse thoroughly.  And don't use a polish that leaves a residue like an oil-based or petroleum-based one.

I'm not sure about seasoning for Al pots; I know the SS ones don't need any seasoning at all.  (Hmmm... am I trying to persuade you to get a new one?)

Although I've never had to do this myself, die hard Brikka lovers swear by vinegar:

Seems like it's worth a try...

Thanks, elbow grease and vinegar seems to have cleaned up the pot... as for turquoise, my mum says she used to clean the bottom after every use with baking soda :-/ Might've been a reaction with the residue or something? *shrug*

Anyways,
Thanks :D

The pot seems to have developed a transparent gelly like substance in the bottom (I put the pot away with the bottom only slightly humid). Safe to wash out and ignore, or should I scrub and reseason it?
