Subject: Vietnamese coffee press isssue

i finally got around to heading to the Oriental Market and picked up supplies to make some Vietnamese iced coffee. the pots were of the screw on kind that i see pictures of all over the internet. so i have tried a few times and it seems the threading of the top filter over the coffee grinds doesn't want to work that well. when i screw it down, the top layer of coffee comes squeezing out, then, whether i use two scoops or one, the top filter doesn't want to thread in no matter how hard i pack that coffee down. threads are fine without coffee in the press. any tips? maybe i can just leave the top filter just sitting on top of the coffee? thanks..

When you say top layer of coffee comes squeezing out - are you referring to coffee grounds coming up into the pot above the screw in filter?

If so, adjust your grind a bit - making it a touch coarser.  You do want the top filter screwed in snugly.  You also want to adjust the amount of coffee - so that you can get the filter threaded on easily. I adjust mine so that its snug, but not so tight that water never makes it out the bottom.  If things are a little too slow, you can try pumping the water through by placing your palm over the pot, and press firmly down.  Be careful though - you don't want to burn yourself.

yeah, the grinds on top tend to float out, but just a little (depending on how much coffee i put in). i've played with it a bit more and find that wetting the grinds a bit helps pack it down so i can screw the top filter down. just a little trial and error. i'm using the Cafe Du Mond stuff in a can, btw. might try this in a moka pot just for the heck of it.
