Welll, if I'da jumped into this conversation last year, I would have said "It's not worth what you pay for it".  I was not all that impressed--there were better coffees out there for 1/3 the price, and I told people so on a regular basis.

Yesterday morning I cupped the current batch of JBM Mavis Banks and I have to say I was totally wowed.  The current crop really *is* worth it, absolutely.  Honestly.  I roasted it to about 15 seconds after the first snaps of 2nd crack in the Alp--no oil on those beans--and let it rest for about 20 hours.  The ground coffee had a beautiful aroma, distinctive and a just a tiny bit nutty.  I prepared it in a press and got a gorgeous, sweet, full bodied and well balanced cup.  If you've tried it in the past and were not thrilled with it, I encourage you to give this year's offering a shot---you might be in for a real treat.  But, if you still don't like it, then you can say you gave it your best shot in a good year, and you really just don't like Jamaican Blue Mountain.

The green coffee I enjoyed was from The Coffee Project.  www.coffeeproject.com.  As many of you already know, I do some contract work for them--so there's my disclaimer.

Do you happen to know of anyone that sells JBM green?  I'd love to give it a try, although if I blew the roast I suppose I'd be out a lot of money.

On the other hand, SM's sells Kona at a very good price.  I might try some of that one of these days...

Galaxy, Sweet Maria's has a supply of this years Mavis Bank JBM green beans.  They usually don't carry JBM, but it was good this year.  Tom also gives you a cupping report.

I've had good JBM as drip and press pot.  I don't think it's worth what you pay for it.  Or, to turn that around, we should be paying $30 a pound for all good coffees.  I'd put a good PNG or Tarrazu up against JBM any day for cup quality.

I brought home some great JBM from Jamaica @4 years ago.  Paid @$25/pound for it.  But since all our friends were loading up on booze at the duty frees, I considered this a comparable thing, since we don't drink much.  But I'd have to agree with what Jim said above.  A freshly roasted whatever is just as good, IMO.  BUT... based upon Chery's post, I may have to give this year's crop a try.....

As others have said - be careful where you get it!
I received a half pound from Gevalia (joined to get a carafe brewer) that I don't recall ordering but figured I'd try.
It might  as well have come out of a can!
I've no idea when it was roasted or which estate its from - it is bad enough that I will likely try again but for now JBM is off by Be Sure To Try Someday list.

I'm going to Jamaica at the end of March.  Staying in Negril.  I plan on buying some JBM.  Which brands do you recommend? And if you've been, where's the best place to buy?

I've heard that Mavis Bank, Old Tavern, & Wallenford Estates are three of the best.

We just got back from Negril yesterday.

The hotel was $24 per pound and the airport was $20.  We took a cab into the downtown area of Negril.  The cab cost $15 each way (we split this with another couple) and they WAIT while you shop and bring you back (you pay the cabbie when you return).   We found Jamaican Blue Mountian Coffee (Jablum & Wallenford Blue) for only $12.00 per pound.  I bought 15 pounds, while the couple we were with bought 10 pounds.  The Rum is VERY cheap there too.  Everyone should do this.

Afterwards we went to Burger King for lunch and also bought our cabbie lunch too.  It's funny for two Whoppers meals was like $514.00 Jamaican dollars.

We then went back to the hotel.  We gave the driver a $10 tip.

what is PNG ? I'm considering buying my first grinder.  and I'd like to see first how readily available are top notch roasted beans (since I will never roast my own...well maybe when I retire and have time).  by top notch I mean the very best in the world (I know that depends on opinion...but you know)
