Are the descaling kits a gimmick?  Can I do it with equal parts vinegar and water?  I have a Krups XP5220 Precise Tamp.

I use citric acid as per Alan Frew's instructions here: http://www.coffeeco.com.au/articles/august2002.html
My pharmacist gave me 50g for free which is good for 5 descalings. Way cheaper than any of the brand name descaler.

I asked my pharmacist about citric acid and she looked at me like I was crazy. Any other sources for it?

Hi Steven,

They're sure to have it at home wine making/home brewing shops. Also in grocery stores (possibly the International aisle) as 'sour salt'.

There was an internet store I used to link to for you guys for larger quantities of citric acid, but that soap making company Snowdrift Farm is now out of business & finishing up orders & refunding money..

I have used vinegar to sweeten pots but never to descale a machine. You need to dissolve the lime and calcium scale, as far as I know, citric acid or a product such as Calcinet do the best job.
