On campus they use Tulley's coffee for their drip and espresso machine. I imagine that they use Tulley's espresso blend for their machines. I might ask someone just incase because when I use Tulley's espresso on my home espresso machine, the coffee tastes different. Then again, the quality of my machine my not be that great (Starbucks Sirena).

I know you like the quality of the americano made by the superautomatic, but may I suggest that it may be a bit off the mark to recreate this drink by emulating the superautomatic techniques.  I'd try some of the techniques described by posters above, and forget pulling 12oz of water through a double shot......just seems wrong.  You may surprise yourself and like it better than the americano from the superautomatic.

How fresh is your coffee and what do you use to grind it?

I'm gonna get judged for this one: A cheap coffee grinder. So there really is no sense of control over how fine the coffee is.

The coffee I use I typically use up in a week. In terms of its roasting date, I am unsure.

I would say with 99% certainty that your grinder i where the difference is..
Pick up a used or refurb'ed Preciso and you should be able to get much better americanos that you have on campus.

The grinder is much more important than the machine itself. There's no way you'll be able to make good espresso with a $20 grinder- unless you stole it from a shop and compensated the previous owner out of remorse, I guess.
