So, I've decided to go the mason jar route for freezing my beans in small aliquots. Until now, I've always just bought beans in 12 or 16 oz bags and stuck them, right into the freezer when they've arrived. I saw when I ordered my mason jars from Ball, they recommend not reusing lids, but I would guess that's because most people are cannin jellies, salsa, etc, not coffee beans. My question is this, how many times do those of you who use mason jars for freezing your beans reuse the lids before needing to replace them. This will have some effect on how many and how soon I buy more.

I've been using my Ball jars for a year and haven't replaced a lid yet. I've even washed them in the dishwasher and they survived. I would replace them when the rubber seal starts peeling away which I'm sure will happen eventually.

They are assuming you are using them for canning and if you are, don't reuse lids. A little imperfection in the seal could cause major issues. As for coffee, keep reusing until they fall apart or don't hold offgassing. You can wash them a ton in the dishwasher but keep the rings out, they seem to corrode and then it's tough to torque them for a good seal.

Thanks guys. This is what I suspected, although I'm surprised by your dishwasher results - even so, I'm more likely to hand wash them. I bought these strictly for storing coffee beans in the freezer, so they will definitely NOT be used for canning.
Glad I only bought one pack of replacement lids. I suspect I'm more likely going to need one or two from them getting lost before any of them wear out.

the other question, I should have asked is what size jars you guys use. I know that varies somewhat from person to person, based on how fast you go through coffee and how often you like the change what's in the grinder...so, here's a little more info to make my question more answerable. Of course, no I have a pretty good idea what I should have bought, had I asked this before buying my jars...I bought 4 oz and 8 oz jars. I got the 4's because I wanted to have small amounts fr the weekend for my wife's decaf. I've found the 8 oz jar lasts me about 2 sessions, well maybe a little more, since I've got visitors this weekend and am going through it a little faster. Now I'm going to buy some 16's as they'll serve me better for my regular.

I prefer the pint (16 oz) jars because I don't want to have any beans left in the jar after filling the grinder hopper. If you don't drink much coffee around your house, the 8 oz jars may be adequate, but I don't think I would use the quart (32 oz) jars. That is only my opinion. Good luck...

yeah, I think you're right. The pint jars are the right size for regular coffee for me. I need smaller ones for decaf, and since I now have both 8 and 4 oz (because I didn't think to ask about size before I bought those) I now have flexibility to figure that part out.
