Hi
My favorite mug is 14 ounces. My doctor suggested I drink smaller amounts at a time (10 ounces$. Any downside to using a larger mug with a smaller batch? The upside is things are less likely to spill when carrying mug.

No downside that I can think of. The heavier the mug you carry around, the more workout you would get. Your doctor might like a nice, thick 24 oz ceramic mug. :-) Take care!

If your 14 oz mug produces a larger surface contact area between the air and the coffee than a smaller mug, then the coffee aromatics will dissipate slightly faster. Your coffee will also cool more rapidly with the larger air contact. If you do not preheat the mug, then the larger thermal mass of the large mug will also cool the coffee faster. However if you do preheat the mug the opposite should be true because of the larger thermal mass at a higher temperature. My favourite mug is double-walled ceramic. I holds slightly less than initial appearances, has a smaller coffee surface area than most and keeps the coffee in my preferred temperature range for longer. This lets me savor a slightly smaller amount of coffee over a longer period of time.

Yes, I think that preheating your large mug would make a noticeable improvement. Even though I mentioned the faster loss of aromatics, I cannot honestly say I have actually noticed a difference.
