Hey there,
I just switched from home roasting on a bbq grill to a Toper 5k. In general the beans are way more consistent but without a doubt the flavor is flat and there is little acidity/body to the cup. We're thinking our temp gauge might be wrong because it takes a long time to recover from the point of equilibrium. It heats up very slow and takes a while to lose heat once it's hot so we can't seem to develop a decent roast curve. Our temp gauge is only showing a climb of 20 C throughout the entire roast.
Any suggestions. Is our temp wrong? Do we not have enough gas pressure?
Well your post is an excellent (may I say, shining) example of giving as little information as possible. As a roaster you must surely know at least the bare minimum of information required to assist you.....if you don't have enough knowledge to know what you need to be telling us, then that's probably why the roasts don't taste good. If you don't have a grasp of the basics, then help via a forum wouldn't be easy for a Gas roaster like the Toper.
Sounds like a gas supply issue; is it propane or NG? A gas repairman should be able to check it out for you at a reasonable cost. My little roaster has temps that correlate with other folks; I'm dropping in at @180c, turnaround @95c, @150c drying ends, 1c @190-194c, 2c @214-218c. It's totally manual with a gas pressure gauge (mmaq) after needle valve. Of course a 5K Toper is not going to roast like a 500g Yang.
