This may be a stupid question, but I wonder if anyone can answer:
I bought an ikea french press this week, as you may know this is can do 3-4 cups. However, I only need a cup of coffee everyday for myself. Will this be too big for one cup, and will I need to buy a smaller french press?

It's not too big - just use less water and less coffee. But it will need more warming with hot water, and you'll lose some of brewed coffee because of the larger space under the filter when pushed down.
