Expertise: I like coffee

Subject: Fixing my old moka

I have an IKEA aluminium moka pot, which I bought in 2009.

The middle section (where one puts the coffee) seems to have corroded a bit and has two tiny holes. I would think that this wouldn't affect the coffee making, but when I do make coffee, the water doesn't rise fully, there is always quite a lot left at the base, and some of the coffee spills in there too.

Is it safe for me to get someone to weld those holes to fix them? I live in India, and it's not easy to get a moka of that size.

It can't hurt to weld the holes but the metal is VERY thin and you might wind up scrapping the basket.
Can you buy one mail order and have a pot shipped to you? If you can talk to us here, you can order from any place in the world but I have never bought/shipped outside of the U.S. so I am not aware of the rules to ship to you.
