I am not sure that using a water softener is a good idea. Recent serious problems with our machine may have been caused by using a combination of our home water softener and an RO system. If water is *too* soft, it could apparently be acidic enough to leach minerals from copper piping, as well as play havoc with electronics that depend on a certain water conductivity to report things like water level.

Yes that water softener is fine, I have one just like it along with canister charcoal and a sediment filter.
The problem above is with the RO system. RO water is too pure. It really does not have anything to do with leaching anything from copper pipes, (we have them too) but rather the water from the RO filter has NO disolved solids and the water will not conduct electric current. The water level sensor depends on making contact and conducting power to establish water level. No conduction of electricty and the system does not work properly. Have you ever seen the power company washing down the high voltage lines with water sprayed from a truck? They used distilled or RO water for the exact reason that it does not conduct electric power.
Aside from that, RO water has a poor flavor for coffee, you need minerals in the water to compliment the coffee.
