Espresso: Silvia V3 Grinder: HG One
Posted Sat Aug 17, 2013, 6:11pm Subject: silvia/Preciso upgrade Debate
Back in January I got a Silvia and Preciso grinder. I absolutely love Espresso and this has been great. Now I want to do get a better espresso. My beans are purchased from a local roaster every 2 weeks (IDrinkCoffee). Here is where the debate comes in. Do I upgrade my grinder first? Grinder is supposed to be most important other than beans right? But I have a single boiler non PID machine, so is this the real problem? Or do I maximize quality and freshness by home roasting with a hottop or something?
If I go grinder route, I am looking at a HG One. For anyone who has not looked at this grinder, I highly recommend checking it out. Yes, it is a hand grinder but incredible. The burr set comes out of a Mazzer Robur series grinder. I had an espresso with this grinder once at IDrinkCoffee and it blew my mind.
I realize my whole setup could be better. But I want to make smaller changes for now if that makes sense. I just wouldn't be willing to go out tomorrow, replace my sivlia and grinder. At the moment it's one or another.

Go with the HG One, pretty much at the top for home grinders especially for single dosing, you'll see a massive difference over the Preciso. You can add a PID to the Silvia as well to get temps consistent and stable vs temp surfing. Then down the road if you decide to upgrade espresso machines you'll already be more then set with the HG One.

Used expertly the Silvia is capable of brewing excellent espresso. Since the grinder is more important for espresso quality than the machine anyhow, I'd advise to upgrade your grinder, too. Adding a PID mostly offers more convenience, because it would free you fom the need of temperature surfing, but it's a worthy investment.
