I usually use a very small amount of dishwasher detergent to clean stainless steel mugs and a glass thermos. Never had any problems with this until the other day. I used a very small amount of Cascade powder on a couple of stainless steel travel mugs, I usually use the liquid, and boy did it make the coffee almost undrinkable for days! My fiance' and I had to use the mugs for several days of bad tasting coffee to finally get rid of the taste. The coffee had a combination of metal and soap taste, as if it got into the crevices of the mug and stayed there a few days. Cleaning and rinsing with ordinary dish soap finally got rid of it, but for awhile there I thought the mugs were ruined. I have read here at CG that baking soda works good for cleaning these mugs.

I have a couple of Nissan Thermos mugs that I use regularly. Once in a while I put them in the dishwasher, and it does a good job of cleaning them. I never use high-temperature water in the dishwasher, nor do I use high-temperature drying. A bit of water that has crept into the liner will usually drain from the bottom once I remove them, but they still work great.

I don't know what the mug is called but I used a friend's stainless steel mug. I one time after I cleaned it out the coffee (well, espresso and milk) tasted soapy. I rinsed it out as best a could and the next day it was the same. This repeat again the next day.
So basically I have the same question: How should these things be cleaned?

I ran into the same problem, so I now use hot water only to clean it. I get the water as hot as possible, let it soak for a while, then come back to it and use a paper towel to scrub as best as possible (once the water that has been soaking has been dumped). It doesn't sound all that sanitary I suppose, but I also don't taste soap anymore :).

I'm there with ya. I used to clean with soap all the time, but got frustrated with drinking soapy-tasting coffee for several days afterwards. So, I stopped using soap, just letting it soak in water overnight each night, and I haven't had any problems since. That was over a year ago and I haven't had any problems. It may sound unsanitary and it may be unsanitary, but it works for me.

I take 1/2 a teaspoon full of Puro Caff and put it in my mug, I then add boiling water, and then I let it sit for 20 minutes. I then rinse the mug well with hot water and wipe it dry with a paper towel. I get no soap taste and a clean mug.
I have been using just a small amount of dish soap, not dishwasher soap, to clean the mugs and it has worked well. It does not clean the coffee stains as well as dishwasher soap, but it eliminates the soap and metal taste.
