Subject: Your recommendations on ESE pods and where to buy them...

Hi guys,

I'm buying a machine to have in my cubicle at work, and I've come to the conclusion that under the circumstances, a machine that uses ESE pods is the only way I can go.

I'm used to grinding my own at home, and have no experience with pods. I know that I can use Illy pods and that they'll produce acceptable results, but they're expensive.

There seems to be quite a few other choices out there, and it would be nice to get feedback from some of you on your experiences. I usually buy Peet's coffee (Espresso Forte blend), so I'm used to a very dark roast.

Also, feedback on good online dealers would also be welcome.

Thanks!
Ronnie

I you didn't already buy a pod-ready machine, it's worth considering a super-auto.  Aabree has been offering the Saeco Trevi for $325 - refurbished and thje price includes shipping. I got one co-worker to commit to a portion of the cost. Once it arrived and a few other people tried it, they all kicked in some $$. The espresso is just okay - it wouldn't be great a  sraight shot but for cafe crema's and americano's it's not bad - way better than the office coffee that was available before. Most of the folks here just turn the dial up to make a 6oz cafe crema and they love it.  I usually make 3 or 4 espresso shots in a rtow, stir in a tiny bit of raw sugar and then drink over ice with 1% milk. It tastes as good as the iced latte's I can get most places locally.  The cost per serving is cheap as we use whole beans from a local micro-roaster and everyone kicks in a couple $$ once a week for a restock.

It may just be this unit that does a horrible job of foaming/frothing but after a number of attempts I gave up on trying to froth with it - the results were abysmal.  I'm curious to know if you really get anything better at the $500 price point like a Solis 5000 - I doubt it.   The jury is out on long term reliability but we've been using this for close to two months and making anywhere from 5 - 30 shots per day. Still working great.

Hey Owen,

A super auto machine isn't even an option for me. I have very little space on my desktop, and I don't intend on becoming a barista for all of my co-workers. Also, things get stolen from my building, so I'm not going to buy an expensive espresso maker just to have it ripped off.

I just need to be able to pull a DECENT double espresso for myself in the late afternoon to get me through the rest of the day. A cheapo (I'm getting the Briel Lido from Amazon) pump machine that uses ESE pods won't be as nice as my Estro machine at home and it won't produce the kind of shot that I'm used to drinking, but it'll beat the hell out of the watery garbage they call coffee in the break room.

BTW, has anyone tried the "Espressione Classic Espresso Coffee Pods" offered at Amazon? Just wondering....
