Someone may or may not be able to help me....
Local roasters are all over the Bay Area, but not always a stone throw away from my house when it is time for coffee.  Any thoughts on Pete's ... It is close by....I tried Major Dickinson's blend before I got my Mazzer so I need to try it again.  I like a lighter espresso so I was looking for suggestions.  I also have a Trader Joe's and a Cost Plus nearby...

As far as I know, Peet's has four key blends well suited for espresso: Espresso Forte, Arabian Mocha Java, Major Dickason and Garuda. All are reliable, but they all tend to be darker roasts. I personally prefer the EF and AMJ. The key is find out the roast dates by calling them, and obviously, the fresher the better. The best that you can do is a roast date of 1 or 2 days ago.

There are many microroasters in the area. If you let us know which part of the Bay Area you are in, it would give us a better idea of what to suggest.

My favorite Peet's blend is Major Dickasons, but you definitely should focus on the roasting date, especially since they roast so dark.

My experience is that the darker roasts they do age more quickly than a lighter roast. For lighter roasts... hmmm... I do them myself.

If you're in Santa Cruz you can try Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Co. or the Aptos Coffee Roasting Co. (I think they're the same). Pacific is also good. Los Gatos has a great roasteria.

I don't know the rest of the bay area as well.

:-)

The closest roaster I've been to is in Fremont (Mission Valley Coffee). Peter James Coffee is in San Leandro, but that's also out of your territory. If the local phone book doesn't have anything listed, then you might need to just bite the bullet and make the drive. Or go postal with mail order beans.

Check out Uncommon Grounds in Berkeley. Nice stuff - I'm a fan of the Molta Roba for espresso (and their Kauai and New Guinea both make excellent coffee in press pots).

Try Peet's house blend. It's a little lighter bodied and makes excellent espresso when fresh...

On Saturday I bought 1/2lb of Major Dickinson promptly broken up into 1/4lb stored containers and frozen.  I then proceeded to throw out the coffee that I bought from a local roaster and used the 1/2lb of Garuda.  I have enjoyed the double shots of Garuda and will keep that one high on my list for now.  I remember liking Major Dickinson so I look forward to breaking that open.
