Moko D'Oro and D'Amico's, both in Brooklyn, have good reputations. I've tried D'Amico's, and I like it. Their house blends are cheap. I also recently discovered Gorilla Coffee in Park Slope and, although I didn't love their espresso, the Brazilian roast was awesome in a vac pot.
Try Empire Coffee and Tea. IIRC they're on 9th Ave a few doors north of 42nd Street. They don't try to offer a hundred varieties like Porto Rico does it is roasted and put out for sale in relatively small quantities (unlike Porto Rico). When I've purchased there it was good and fresh - some had been roasted that day. They don't have an espresso blend but it's easy enough to put one together.
