Subject: What bean/blend would you suggest?

Hello All-

I'm new here.  I've been reading for awhile, but finally registered and now I'm posting.

I've had a Saeco Vienna DeLuxe since Christmas 2000 and love it.  I'm sure that some will say that I could get a better shot from a semi-auto or even a manual (with some practice).  But, this machine was a happy medium for myself.  On a daily basis I drink crema's or americano's.  And, a few times a week I enjoy a latte.  I'm still experimenting with beans.  I don't have a roaster (yet).  So, I must buy roasted whole beans.  I've tried numerous brand from the grocery store, Starbucks, and a few online retailers.  I usually come back to JBM from Jablum (Mavis Bank).  It runs $28/lb with shipping.  And, I'm not sure that it's really worth it.  I've tried making espressos with my machine.  And, they are ok.  But, I've certainly had better.  I'm sure this is a combination of my machine and the beans I've used.  I'm looking for some new beans/blends to try.  What would you suggest?  If you actually use this machine I'd like to know what bean/blend you use on a regular basis.

I'd like to soon get a good grinder, roaster, and semi-auto or manual machine.  I've also read good things about the french press.  I'll probably get that when I get a good grinder.  My kitchen will most likely always have a super-auto for convenience.  I rarely have time to spare in the morning.  I like to eith leave it on all night or turn it on when I wake... and, by the time I'm ready to walk out the door I can push the button a few times to fill my travel mug.

So, now that you've read my novel.  I'd like your suggestions on beans/blends and where to order from.

Thanks,

Keith

Hi, welcome to the board.

A lot of information is contained in the past discussion threads; especially on the more general questions "how to" and "where do I find" questions. You can use the search function (little magnifying glass at the top of the page) to find the relevent entries.

You'd have quickly turned up this one.

Thanks for the reply Jim.

The post you linked was very helpful.

I have done numerous searches, but I must have used different wording as I did not turn up that post.

From what I've read thus far, I think I'll try Malabar.  Many people seem to like it quite well.  And, WLL recommends Malabar for super-auto machine.

Vivace's Espresso Vita also sounds like a winner since I enjoy Latte's.

I'm still looking for a good bean/blend for crema's and americano's to use with my super-auto.

Cremas and Americanos are equivalent to brewed coffee; so they are a good way to explore single varietals rahter than blends. It may be a Pita changing beans in the grinder, so if you want to get into this, my best advice is to buy a decent grinder like the Solis Maestro or Starbucks Barista and use the bypass doser.

Unfortunately, the Vienna Deluxe does not have a bypass doser.  I looked at the other models  when I purchased, but decided I didn't need the bypass doser.  My rational was that I wouldn't use decaf.  I wasn't thinking about keeping a bean in the hopper for espresso and another in a grinder for americanos.  Oh well, I still love the machine.

Maybe I'll try a single bean with a french press for now.  I think I'm going to try Malabar next.

I wish I could find a local shop to get fresh roasted.  For now, I'll have to order online.
