I miss the old days when Illy was in the painted lady can, circa 1992, or even the brown cans. The cans came super pressurized and would actually explode if you did not first puncture it. At least for the first couple of days the flavor was chocolatey with good caramel. Smooth with a little citrus and a wonderful aftertaste. Does anyone remember those days? The new can design has great design, sleek, modern, absolutely sucks functionally. I rarely ever get a can that still has any pressure left in it. Always stale. Maybe even the roast changed?

I have tried Illy in the 3 kilo super can and it is good, like the old flavors, but am not about to drink 3 kilos in a couple days.

Does anyone know of a roast that is similar to Illy? I like the fairly light northern Italian type roast.

Scrap the Illy and go for some lovely online artisan roasts.
They will come to you *FRESH* and you will not believe the difference that makes!

Here's a thread with some good information:  "Favorite Online (roasted) Espresso Blends"

Lately, my favorites are
(the first two or three could be described as "chocolatey with good caramel, smooth with a little citrus and a wonderful aftertaste)

Classic Espresso from RocketCoffee
Ambrosia from CaffeFresco
Espresso Delight from MitalenaCoffee
Redline from MteropolisCoffee
Meritage from CuveeCoffee
CodeBrown from CoffeeEmergency
Peru Villarica Estate from www.hopsoncoffee.com
Black cat from Intelligentsia

(My apologies in advance for anyone I forgot)

Scrap the Illy

Exactly. Thanks for the list however, I am trying to short circuit a little of the legwork and find a recomendation on a roast that is very similar to the old taste of illy. I have been preferring my local roaster Alterra's Organic Espresso. It is a lighter roast but has a much stronger citrus note especially in the finish. I am looking for something that starts with a strong chocolate, hint of tobacco and citrus and then carmel comes in at the finish. I like Black Cat but find it too bold. Streamline was good but far too expensive for shipping to Milwaukee. Dolce was good as well, close to what I am after.

Do the legwork and try some of the blends. It's the exploration that is the fun.
Again, the first few on my list above approximate your description.
