Firm opinion, well, yes.... La Colombe is crap, I mean really really crap, like getting kingsford charcoal and grinding it to a dust. I don't drink "blonde" coffee, so I won't get into all that, but the espresso, crap. The worst part is all the restaurants worth a damn use it....It's like the emperor's new clothes; Everybody knows it's crap, but everybody pretends it's good, or more likely, doesn't know better. I can't even blame the mafia for it's existance, since I'm sure if the mob got involved in coffee, they would never make coffee that bad. I drink S. Passalacqua coffee from naples, italy, that I get from Caffe italia in CT. If I can't get that, i usually go to Puerto Rico coffee in NYC or Kimbo black bar bag. Sorry to be so blunt, but everytime I go out and some waitron puts on her 24% tip smile and tells me the coffee is la Colombe, I feel like pulling out an envelope of instant sanka and asking for a cup of hot F***ing water!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear that you feel better now! Very interesting to read your comments.... the thread that was in egullaet was specificallly discussing their regular coffee, not the espresso but it was also part of a discussion that had started about Julius Meinl coffee. Cafe Sabrasky in Manhattan is serving this Austrian import at some insanely high price like $5-7 per cup (not espresso - just regular coffee). If La Colombe is a dark roast I'd be unlikely to find it to my liking these days although I have been known to enjoy a good French Roast on occasion (asmittedly that was before I got hip to a wider variety of coffees and before I really developed an interest in espresso). I imagine I'll get to Philly within the next few months - any suggestions for cafes I should check out?

Geez, I wish I had a suggestion for you. so much bad coffee everywhere....you know, i might be a bit of a caveman, but the only thing i drink are straight shots, short and sweet. Milk based drinks, even cappucino don't do much for me...maybe it makes em' better and i can't do the blonde stuff.... i drink a lot of coffee at home and at the homes of friends. i can help you w/food recommendations, but w/coffee i've always been SOL sorry again

So Gregorio, I'm interested to hear about your new roasting experience, if you've gotten into it yet. I just found this thread today and I'm curious if you're satisified with the results you can produce. I picked up a Popcorn Pumper off of Ebay a week ago and have a chance to roast a few little batches now, trying to refine my technique and get some repeatability. My wife wonders why I giggle like a little schoolgirl (well, not quite that bad) when I'm roasting, she doesn't get the fun aspect of it I guess. Anyway, I now realize what a difference fresh roast makes, even in a sub-$100 Krups pump. Didn't know the little guy could put out so much crema until I took things into my own hands. ;) Living in an area starved for anything resembling a real coffee house with fresh beans (central PA), it's the best $1 Ebay purchase I've ever made!

Well, I went out and bought an old crank popcorn maker, and I have been roasting for about a month now. It's sort of what people said, and sort of what I said. The roasts are a bit inconsistent, but when they are good, they are very good indeed. I have been using a 50% brazilian 25% guatemalan and 25% columbian, with an occasional switch from columbian to costa rican. Because of my psychosis, I have spoken with a machinist friend who is making me a suitable roasting chamber that I can attach to my outdoor grill. I might just post my final "mouse trap", just so you all understand why I really didn't need to get into home roasting! The one thing that is definitely true, we are never really getting freshly roasted coffee from anyone! Btw, I had a cup of LaColombe at their cafe recently, and it was a bit better than the last time I had it, but it's still nothing like my coffee at home. Cheers! Greg

My recent experience on having beans roasted in a home roaster is not good [ very bitter]. Also the green beans cost the same as the best retail outlets 1 -2 lbs at a time. Then even when you are careful the consistency of taste is poor. I'm in Toronto and now get Timothys espresso and it is $12.00 cdn/lb. and always good crema.... Faema has really good coffee at their outlet. I have an 18yr old Faema Family Machina that has been serviced a few times and it makes better taste than 90% of the places I have had a coffee at. That's simply not true! {:-/ As a homeroaster I think I can safely say that myself & all of us here on the Coffeegeek forum's that are roasting their own, on alt or wherever do produce excellent result's!

I guess., I'm not the greatest espresso blend creator out there... Or I'd have to build an espresso blend for you based on what you like/don't like in your espresso out there in the shop's.I could roast some single variety's for you.Other than your espresso machine, what other's brewing method's do you use, if I may ask?
Here's some info on double roasting. I've never heard of any amateur homeroaster's doing this, & I certainly haven't.

I don't roast a lot for espresso, but I am getting more heavily into it.I've only roasted a few blend's as I was going through a big bag of MG, Malabar Gold & tweaking that also.
I basically roast a lot of single varietal's & do some blending for French press brewing,& vac pot for 3 people in our household.What taste preference's do you like in your espresso? Chocolate note's,caramel,fruit,spiceness,earthiness/funk from Monsoon Malabar?
