Subject: Dandelion Espresso?

Before I get a lot of finger-wagging haters in this thread, I'm not asking about this because I believe in the "naturopathic benefits" people go on about with this drink. I'm just asking because people say it tastes velvety and nutty, and that sounds pretty good.

Has anyone tried making espresso out of roasted dandelion root? I've got a lot of dandelions, and I found out the other day that people actually make "coffee" out of them.

It's supposed to taste nutty.

Apparently you're supposed to grind it very very fine anyway, which gave me the idea. Before I set off on an adventure to roast some dandelion roots in the pursuit of a strange root espresso-beverages, are there any naysayers?

This sounds like something that would be found on a tea forum.  If it doesn't come from a coffee plant, it isn't coffee... Just my opinion.

It's ersatz coffee . . . people used roasted dandelion roots (among other things) to make fake coffee in the 1800s, and in times of shortages like World Wars I and II.

When you get right down to the nitty gritty, I guess it's all tea, isn't it?  Even coffee is a tea... now look at what you've started, Steve.

Note that I said "coffee" in quotations. It's neither tea nor coffee, but what exactly do we call it then? And what do we call it if we put it in an espresso machine. Oh, the implications.

I found this on google. Apparently somebody already tried this. They described it as "velvety"

OOOH, more interesting information tidbits: apparently "dandelion coffee" was common in pioneer life in eastern Ontario, Canada (Where I live). Susanna Moodie, the author, wrote that in the absence of coffee in shipments from Europe, people would roast dandelion root and drink it instead of coffee. Neat, that means it has cultural value.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "out in the weeds," doesn't it?
