Does anyone who owns both a Simonelli Oscar and MDX know the best setting for espresso shots please help I don't want to waste more beans! THANKS!

I don't own an Oscar but I do own a MDX and a millenium HX machine. There are so many variables to grind settings and also individual grinders even the same model, that no one can give you a "best setting". I was having a very difficult time dialing in my MDX it is my first real espresso grinder, I ended up blowing through pounds of coffee 1st because my burrs were bad and I had no idea. Then because I had no idea how many notches (markings) to adjust at a time or where to start. The general advice that helped me the most is to find the true 0 on your grinder there are several threads on this. The other helpful thing I learned is to make tiny adjustments which is different for each machine, but for my MDX correlated to <1/2 number turns using the number markings on the knob and the 0 on the grinder sticker. When I was close I did tiny adjustments like 1 notch using the closer markings on the grinder instead of the further markings on the knob. After cleaning my grinder and replacing the burrs which were responsible for at least 2lbs of sink shots (fun times) I turned my knob finer until the burrs were touching not locked but just touching. I was terrified of ruining my new burrs so I did this with the machine off making small adjustments about 1/4 number on the knob finer and spinning the middle hex shaped nut this would spin the burrs and when they just started to touch I felt resistance and heard a light scraping I knew this was the zero. You have to make sure there are no beans in the burrs at all. From there you back of 1/2 a number coarser and grind a bit. Sweet marias has a guide to test the grinds with your fingers, with pictures that I found helpful. If you pinch the grounds they should clump together but if you can see your finger prints in the grounds they are to fine if they do not hold together they are to coarse. I have read that they should feel just a little bit coarser than flour and finer than salt or sugar, though this advice didn't help me as much as the pinch test. Keep adjusting your grinder in small increments coarser checking the grounds by feel until they feel close this will save you at least a few sink shots. You have to clear out the chute and doser between each adjustment or you wont get consistent results and will end up chasing your tail. For me I started actually pulling shots to test the grind when I hit 1.5 numbers from the true zero point and it basically choked my machine. After that I kept moving coarser by 1/4 of a number and pulling the shots being careful to remove all the grinds in between until my shots were just a little slow. At this point start adjusting using the small markings on the grinder so you don't skip over the best setting for your machine/dose/beans. I know how frustrating it is to waste so much time and coffee and still not have the right setting I hope this advice helps you just stick with it and you will get it just right. This may or may not help you but my current setting is just under 3.5 numbers from my true 0, my grinders zero is when the 7 on the knob is on the 0 on the grinder markings. If your grinder is not new it is important to check the burrs in fact it may be worth checking and cleaning them even if it is new. Good luck!
