I just got this email:

Dear Deep Cello Customers,
We've had a lot of fun roasting coffee for you the last few years. We are retiring the Deep Cello Brand. The founders are heading in other directions and its unfortunate, because it's been such a glam situation. We are so thankful for all the kudos, love and also for the friendships that we built with so many of you.
Justin will still be roasting at his other gig, BadBeard's Coffee Roasters. Pay him a visit. The coffees are different but they are GREAT.
Peace, and God Bless!
The Team at Deep Cello

yeah, that's kind of sad, but at the same time...I went to order from them the other day and although I wanted some of their beans, chose not to - because I couldn't get it directly from them.  I refuse to support the services that redirect or reship beans, and will only order from those roasters who are willing to deal with and ship to me directly.

I sure was saddened to get that e-mail too - Deep Cello's Nostromo and a couple others have been top favorites for a long time.  If Stumptown Hairbender blends like Lafite and Coava is a vineyard Musigny, Nostromo was surely vintage Port: rich, deep and just hugely delicious.  (I grabbed what I could find from a local store, but I'm already running out...)

Deep Cello had sold directly from their own site until recently - I'm sure their losses from the previous ROASTe fiasco didn't help any, and I doubt very much that third-party order/ship was Deep Cello's first choice.  My guess would be that it was mandated more by critical mass issues than a preference to go back to third-party.  I know it's not because they were lazy, that's for sure: if you lived around Portland, Deep Cello would deliver even a one-bag order to your door absolutely free - and that bag would always contain way more than you paid for, plus hefty free samples of new roasts.  It's really a shame that the mechanics of Deep Cello's own website ordering wasn't nearly as consistent.

The good news at least is that Justin himself keeps going strong with BadBeardsCoffee, and his several roasts I've tried from there have been superb.  I'm hoping that people's favorites such as High-Jump, Basso, Nostromo and the rest of these unique and thoughtful blends will migrate over to BadBeards to accompany his several (also excellent IMO) SOs, plus the Symphony blend and the rest.  I've had real good luck with the BadBeard S.O.B and Blue Nile Yirgacheffe especially - plus the Midnight Tango blend is great fun (in cocktail terms, think "Batavia Arrack meets Neisson VSOP rhum meets Cruzan Blackstrap").  As a group, they're not fussy or finicky - in my experience they'be been flexible and they respond to tuning over pretty wide flavor range using anywhere from 15g-21g and 196F-203F and levers (or pressure profiling) can add even more over the last 10 seconds of the shot.  I remember seeing that he uses a Sylvia for testing to make sure you don't need a Linea or a Synesso for good results.  To my eyes, the BadBeard site all looks very light-hearted and irreverent, but I think that's just a front for a very serious person consistenly delivering a high level of the roaster's art.

Thanks for the link to BadBeards'.  It makes it easy for the lazy to chekc it out.  I'll definitely be ordering from them...though between upcoming vacation and having just ordered 2#s from Klatch, it'll be a couple/few of weeks.
