Hines espresso is a must try. Smooth with little acidity, chocolatey, delicious. Lighter than black cat (dunno zoka), it's a medium dark roast, not so dark as to appear oily or make for bitter or burnt flavor, but darker than code brown. Really really good stuff. tom:)
Hines is a lot different than Black Cat. I've had it twice, a few month apart. Hines has stronger secondary notes than BC, while BC has a more complex finish.

Hey, anyone here ever made espresso with peets French Roast??
Actually, the more espresso I try, the more I find it is fallacious to think there is such thing as a perfect espresso. In the hands of a master roaster, espresso can be so many more things than merely good or bad. One doesn't have to look much further than the growth of SOS for proof of this.
89 is an outstanding rating, once you get up that high differences in machine temp, personal taste, and age of the sample account for much of the remaining score differences. I'd submit the yemen and code brown for sure, both are clearly going to get (IMO) top ratings. I think it's important to send the samples to CR when they are about to be evaluated, I've seen comments to the effect that some low ratings have been due to samples waiting too long for review. tom:)
I know there's general disdain for Peet's on these boards, so I say with some caution: Their Espresso Forte aint bad. Mostly you're tasting carbon, but its got a noticable richness and chocolate overtones that break through the smoke. Not so great with milk, and quite uneven recently, but man oh man have I had worse. Their french roast is a little beyond recognition, had no luck with that as either coffee or espresso. I think their Sumatra is excellent in both press and drip.
Then again, I'm one of these guys that prefers Paladino and Black Cat to Paradise and Hairbender, so take the above with that in mind.
That also said, I'm looking forward to trying the code brown.
JonR10 - if there was a proven cheap, quick Austin/Houston shipping solution, I'd be into splitting orders. I'm guessing there's not much chance, but let me know what you think.
Maybe so, but I can think of better companies to earn my dollar - think small batch artisan roasters doing more to promote quality - and not the corporate vision (over-roasted dreck). I'd rather give my dollar to the small, harder working individual. Why give your money to peets when there, overally are better candidates out there. It doesn't take much skill to roast dark.
