Thanks to the friendly folks over on the machines & grinders board, I'm in the final stages of picking a machine & grinder to start the journey into home espresso, however i normally drink decaf, is it possible to get good decaf beans, or am i wasting my time & money if i only plan to drink decaf ?

IMHO...
If you're buying fresh roasted beans, decaf will taste different than the regular version of the bean/blend, but not necessarily bad. I regularly buy a small amount of decaf beans for night time latte's and enjoy them immensely. I don't notice the "funky" decaf taste with fresh beans like I did with supermarket type coffee.
One caveat...decaf beans will most likely require a much different grind than regular beans for espresso. I have to grind mine quite a bit finer or tamp much more heavily to get into the 20-28 second range than I do with regular beans. I'm hoping the grind will become more predictable when my Rocky gets here...hopefully in time for Christmas!
Good luck.

I drink almost exclusively decaf espresso, and I have no more than one cup of regular drip coffee per day. And the decaf espresso only on the weekends. I decided to cut back because I'm quite into running right now and don't do well with lots of regular. I absolutely love fresh roasted decaf, because all the flavor I want is there, and I can have a million shots and it's as if I had less than one. Makes roasting and experimenting very easy. With decaf, I'd highly recommending homeroasting and/or buying fresh roasted if it's done well.

I use Lacolombe monte carlo decaf http://www.lacolombe.com/business.html and espressovivace decaf vita http://www.espressovivace.com/blends.html I find both excellent. I notice no appreciable difference with the caffeinated espressos from the same roasters. I buy in small quantities, grind per shot, and the beans stay fresh and the espresso tastes great. Chriscoffee's Camardo decaf is excellent also, Click Here (www.chriscoffee.com) you can also check out http://www.coffeereview.com/ this site is the best compliment to coffeegeek going. The reviews are excellent. It is a great resource.
