If I was to order, say, 10 different coffees from Sweet Marias to start experimenting with blending what would you go for? I'm already planning on some Brazil CErrado, monsooned malabar, and a Yemen. What else? What should I have on hand to paly around with?

Also, what would I need alot of for base coffee? Brazil? In other words, what would I want to buy 5# of, but, be ok with say 1# of, since I wouldn't want to use THAT much of that particular bean. I realize that is kind of subjective, but....

cheers,
Jim

For espresso definately consider keeping some Uganda and Tanzania Peaberry

For drip coffee I would suggest experimenting with Guatemalan, Costa Rican, Tanzania peaberry, Ethiopian (the Ethiopians are ALL good: Harar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe).  Also you may like to try Sulawesi, Kenya and maybe even an exotic like Kona or Jamaican Blue Mountain (it's terribly expensive but also a unique coffee).

Brazilian, MM, Yemen, Kenyan, Guatemalan, Colombian, Ugandan, Sumatra, and Celebes/Sulawesi are the key ingredients to all the espresso blends I know.

I haven't tried it but this one is supposed to be very good:

Also:
Brazil (Cerrado best for starters?) - Sulawesi (and/or Java) - Harrar
Harrar is a great dry process coffee for espresso. I like it at about 30% of the blend.  Then you could sub Harrar with Yemen($), almost any of the other Africans or virtually any of the beans with some fruit like Guat.  He has a good Java and they're not as easy to come by lately.

If you want to just try a blend with some monsooned and a little robusta you can try the Liquid Amber.

thanks everybody for the advice. Looks like I'll have to take a rain check. My parents just showed up with my christmas presents. A raggedy Ann for my 9mon. old Daughter. bath, uhhh, stuff, for my wife, and 20 pounds of random stuff from Sweet Marias! Most of it is their espresso blends, which I'm very fond of, so, things are good over here!!!!!!!! Looks like I'll be saving that gift certificate until I NEED it!!!!!!

Now, Jon, what was it you were saying about the SC/GG combo??:)

cheers,
Jim

Since you got all of the great espresso blends from SM (very cool parents to do so)  it might be the perfect time to experiment with some of the coffees mentioned.  You've got a pretty good side by side set of standards to compare to!  Merry Christmas to you.

Hey that's a nice list of coffees.  I do like Harrar as espresso and Yemen Mocha Ismaili as well.  I just roasted Brazil Cerrado as a base, blending with Harrar about 25% and aged Sumatra Lintong about 25%.  I like the sweet, syrupy character of the brazil, and the accents provided by the harrar and Sumatran. These three coffees were preblended, then roasted into second crack until the point where the surface finish changed from dull to satin / semigloss, but no oil spots were present anywhere.   That's about how I roast Harrar, so it's not too dark.  I do have to say that I'm a lot more insecure about blending than I am about anything else in coffee.  I'll tear into machines without any concern, but blending?

El Salvador Santa Elena is one i like you havent seen here yet

other then that... my advice is think outside the box.. think about what flavors YOU want to achieve from your espresso and then look for the coffees that will help you do that.
