Here's a naked triple collage from this morning. Grind is better than my previous posting, could still be slightly finer. Blonded a bit early, starting around 1.5oz. If anyone wants me to post a single frame for diagnostic reasons, let me know, I'm a sucker for punishment. (Not really. :-)
Rapid Coffee - its good to have more people posting pics. I have 2 questions: first, what is that thing on the bottom of the PF basket? And second, how do you make that collage? Do you use software that automates it, or do you tediously place one picture next to the other with photoshop or whatever?

Based upon this and the other referenced post, I think you've got issues with the puck/basket wall seal. Your extraction begins as an annular ring and blonds pretty quick around the circumference. Notice the richer color in the center of your shots. Your knock in the tamp-knock-tamp could have a little too much oomph, or you could be jarring the PF too much on its way into the grouphead. You gotta be gentle with the PF... Some geeks also say a convex tamper can help create a better puck/basket wall seal (I am one of those geeks).

I've started using Picasa software from Google for photo editing. Free, powerful, and easy to use. The collage functionality is just one of many cool features. Highly recommended.
Gee, I thought that "thing on the bottom of the PF basket" was the espresso dripping through. :-) Kidding aside, do you mean in the first frame? Probably an artifact of the flash bouncing off/through the basket.

Thanks for the diagnosis, sounds very reasonable, I'll be more gentle with my tap next time. I use a flat Pro Tamp, but a friend has a convex tamp that I can try (and maybe it will give me an excuse for more espresso paraphenalia). I'm still playing around with the grind for a triple, and with dosing/tamping. Lately I've been stirring with a dissecting needle to distribute the grounds and break up clumps. Maybe we've just discovered a downside to this technique...
This one turned out probably the best. It had 1 spurt towards the end that was pretty short-lived. I had been tapping pretty hard down on the fork as I filled up the basket, which seems to do more to promote unevenness than anything else.... I'm doing something a little more like JonR does, now, tamping lightly halfway through, though at the end I distribute with my finger NSEW before tamping, because, looking at my pucks, I think my spurts are comming from a bad seal against the basket sides...
Sucks that the shot glass got in the way of the big droplet...
