Sammy Piccolo was over today getting some pointers on what will be judged in the Canadian Barista Competition, and what will go on in the Worlds' as well (also he watched some raw footage on video from the WBC and USBC in Boston).

After I showed him my pitiful skills on the LM machine in the basement, especially my latte art skills (Caffe Artigiano, where Sammy works, is probably the best-skilled Latte Art "crew" on the planet (ie, more staff know how to bang it out there in high volume than anywhere else) and Sammy is arguably the best of the best in that shop)... after I showed him my terrible skills, Sammy took over. Without knowing my machine and it's 2.0BAR setting for the steam boiler (which makes it a lot more powerful than the already-powerful FB70 four groupers that Sammy works on) from the get go he banged out exquisite, no-brainer latte art.

The photos below are his first and second attempts with an unknown machine.

And this video is of his third attempt:

http://www.coffeegeek.com/tempphoto/sammy.mov

A note: the video is encoded for "fast start" which means it should start playing as soon as 1/5th or so is downloaded. It's 8.2mb in total size (original was 22.4mb). It's encoded with Sorensen 3, and AAC/MPEG-4 audio. That means you need an MPG4 codec to view - if you have QuickTime 6.x you should have it. If you don't, visit www.apple.com/quicktime to download a viewer. 6.3 is the current version.

Here's a photo of his first attempt:

WoW!
That's totally awesome Mark, he just walk's in there & bang's out that amazing quality of work, without so much as ever laying eye's on, or using your machine!!

hey mark,

how many staff would you say work at artigiano that can produce latte art every time on a customers drink?

Hi Billy.

Lemme say this - it's pretty much the exception to the rule if, when ordering a cappuccino, latte, or machiato, if you don't get latte art on the drink. This goes for take out as well as ceramic-in-house. AFAIK (and seen), they do it on every drink they serve.

I even talked to Sammy about doing it on americanos (ie, ask the customer if they'd like a small amount of froth and steamed milk with their americano, and if they say yes, then do a rosetta or heart).

Wow!  Too pretty to drink.  Well, maybe not.  Where is Cafe Artigiano?  City and location please.

Thanks,

Neil

In Vancouver, BC. Two locations - one's on Hornby right next to the Art Gallery downtown.

Sammy works at the other location - 1101 West Pender.

Cheers
