These 84 disposable coffee cups were collected anywhere from Vivace to gas stations. In general terms, the prettier the cup the worse tasting the coffee. Stumptown uses a stamp of a roaster on their paper cups. Not worth collecting to me but they make good espresso drinks. Zoka doesn't even have a disposable cup with their logo on it.

The photo contains an optical illusion. Can you see it? It is very hard to figure out. See next reply for answer.

The optical illusion answer: The camera lens used to take this photo was positioned above the center of the cups (center of 4.5 feet by 3 feet area). So looking at the top row of cups you can see the bottom of the cup. Looking at the bottom row you can see slightly inside the cup. But the cups to the left and right of the photo appear to be pointed straight up but they are not. The cups on the left and right were rotated in to point toward the camara lens. So to the lens they appear to be pointed straight up but in reality the cups at the left and right of the photo are rotated inward.

I also put a small stone inside each cup so they would stay put and not roll around.

Why 6 rows and 14 columns of cups? To make the 84 cup image fit neatly on a 35mm negative (4x6 print). (x=rows and y=colums). Each cup fits in a 4" by 6" area. So, x times y = 84 and 4y/6x=6/4 (35mm negative ratio). So a real world example of using high school algebra, 2 unknowns, 2 equations.

The next riddle: The more disposable cups I collect, the fewer I have.

Gary,
I used to think that the picture of you was just a joke. Now I realize that those are your real eyes, and that thing in your mouth is some sort of surgically-implanted caffeine intake device.
best,
Christopher

PS. Paper cups make coffee taste like caca.
