OK, must have had too much caffeine that day (I think I pulled a blond shot and then masked it with milk & sugar). I just thought I was being 'traffic wardened' after my 1st post.
Sorry for the tone of my post Greg

we tried it and the portafilters became ovalized in a matter of a couple weeks and then they broke.
How much of the bottom was removed? With most PFs, a fair bit of the base can be left so that the ring is not totally unsupported. Were you only using the bottomless PF on request or for all shots?

Does anyone know if any Italian cafes use bottomless pf's? Somewhere I heard that they don't because they believe that the bottom of the portafilter is essential to creating the right taste.

I went back to a normal PF.
They are mainly used for training new baristi in the industry. Home-users like them for the nudity-factor.
Once I had a good ritual down with decent consistency I stopped caring about the bottomless. I never pull triples and I don't updose so it became useless.

It is always fun to be naked!!! ;-)
I haven't used my double-spout PF since I took my clothes off (went naked).
I took my naked PF with me on a recent 2-month business trip (where they have a Silvia for us to use), and left my wife with the stock double spout Silvia PF. After a few days, she wasn't very happy with me...
All things being equal, I don't see any reason for a coffee geek not be naked at home. It sure improves and maintains your technique! :-o
Besides watching the stream converge under the portfilter being a great free show, there are other reasons:
- a stream from a standard spout wil mask areas of the pull which are less than ideal. You can watch the bottom of the PF for each shot to see what is really going on.
- it makes clean up a lot easier
- some portafilters are poorly designed. For example, the "floor" inside the Vibiemme portafilter body is quite flat. Even after all the dripping has stopped it still holds an amount of coffee that will dribble on the machine and counter when removing the PF for knocking out the puck.
That is great to say. If only we are not naked outside, it seems safe.
