It's always nice to find out that something that was supposed to be bad for you isn't so bad after all :)
I don't know why some parents look at you cross-eyed for giving kids coffee though. Those same parents don't think twice about Coke, Pepsi or Mountain Dew. Ok maybe they don't give them those drink for breakfast but they do other times a day. Chocolate milk contains caffeine too and it's not uncommon at breakfast time. I have no problem with my daughter (12) drinking a cup of coffee. Since I drink decaf that's all she's used to which probably isn't a bad thing. If she wanted a cup at breakfast I'd have no problem with that.
When I was growing up, every time we had vegetables on the dinner table, I would make sure they didn't come close to touching the other food. My dad started joking around with me by saying stuff like "Make sure you don't get any of that horrifying poisonous broccoli on your chicken, there!" That escalated to "For heaven's sake, don't eat the brussells sprouts."
With coffee, it was always the old cliche "Don't drink that stuff, it'll stunt your growth."
Naturally, I love coffee, spinach, brussels sprouts, broccoli and even asparagus now. All the stuff that was poisonous to little kids! ;D
Shoot, don't they say that red wine is good for you? I've also heard that in Germany, the heart disease rate is fairly low depsite the diets of salty pork and such, and the consumption of beer as if it were espresso to us.
All falls back to he principle "everything in moderation..."

I always have a little chuckle at this saying. I have been drinking coffee in various forms since I was 4 and I am now almost 40, 6'2" and 190. I guess if I didn't drink coffee I may have had a chance at a basketball career.
Thanks for the article. I think I'll stick with this report even when the inevitable "coffee-is-bad-for-you" report comes out.
BTW - I feed my 14 year old an espresso each morning and I may have to increase his intake as he is within 6" of me. (Man, they grow up fast)
My firstborn son is now almost 2 months old, and he's topping at least 11 lbs now, maybe more like 12. I haven't measured his length, but for a kid that emerged at about 7.5 lbs, he's growing quickly!
I just can't wait until he's old enough to try espresso becuase I want to get his initial reaction, good bad or ugly. Should be fun!
And then by what will seem like next week, he'll be 14, drinking a shot every morning, jumping over houses on his way to school...

you may not have long to wait Hamm! my little chick's first experience with coffee was in her 1st week. when she was having a crying fit one day, i had her swaddled in the crook of one arm and hit the go button on my innova grinder. don't know if you've ever heard one but it's ridiculously loud, just an insane shriek. boom, she goes quiet and can't take her eyes off the shiny grinder and silvia. that was the only way to stop her wailing sometimes. i think at around 4 months or so, i had a shot in my hand before work and her in the other. she saw me drink it and looked interested. sorta messing around, i set the cup down, dipped my pinky finger in, and brought it to her mouth. all of a sudden, she opened her mouth like a bird and tasted it. she puckered a bit, and then opened up again! ever since, she's been down with it. every morning she runs around between my wife and i, yelling "taste, taste!" for a taste of whatever's on the day's menu. she had a little brown cap 'stache over her lip when i left for work yesterday. she always wants me to hold her while i make coffee now. i take the lid off the mini's doser so she can see the grinds come out, and points to the tea's e61 and says "hot! hot!" it's a lot of fun and i'm sure a few drops of espresso aren't gonna do her any harm. i think i'll give her a bambino iced americano with a 1/4 shot and a few oz. of water in a sippy cup and see if she likes it. dan

I almost hate to do this, but did you ever watch the Simpsons episode where they move to the country and become farmers? Homer "nukes" the crops and winds up with the dreaded "tomacco" plant, the cross between a tomato and tobacco.
Well when I read your post, I pictured all the bloodshot-eyed farm animals going crazy for their tomacco fix!
I'm tempted to try your trick with my little one since lately he's taken to fussy screaming any time he's within an hour of a feeding.
Then again, we're still trying to get him to figure out what sleep is and when you're supposed to do it. He still confuses sleep with food a lot.
I'd much rather have my kid(s) grow up drinking espresso than soft drinks any day! (Lets see, soda pop has about 150 calories in a typical can, espresso has I'm guessing less than 8)
