I just got a new toy and I wanted to check out the movie mode. So what better way than pouring macchiato art!.

It was a bit of a challenge actually - the camera's bloody small in my big mitts, so trying to hold it steady AND pointing at what I'm doing, plus pouring was hard. But this was a first attempt. the second pour in the vid was better than the first cup.

Two movies are available... a 2.26mb WMV format (for PCs), formatted for the PocketPC but nicely viewable on the desktop can be found here (right click and save it to your desktop).

A less polished, quick convert version for Mac people can be found here. Mac people, do that freaky symbol click thing to save the file...

Awesome Mark,

I didn't think you could pull it off by just resting the cup on the counter but you proved me wrong.  Now try while standing on one foot and blindfolded!! I know you can do it.

I'm not quite Zak Lakic yet (the dude from Artigiano who does it blindfolded).

One other note... it may look like I'm excessively shaking the pitcher to "coerce" the froth out. That's true. I found I had to compensate for the cup remaining flat by being more forceful with the pitcher.

When I pour "freestyle", that is, the espresso cup in my right hand, the pitcher in my left hand, I'm using tilt in both the pitcher and espresso cup to coerce the foam out at the right moment, and I do a lot less "shaking". It's more like I'm "throwing" the pitcher forward when I want to get the foam to start appearing.

When I poured the first drink in the vid, I realised I wasn't getting the froth out when I wanted, so I started to shake it to coerce it out. When I poured the second one, I realised what kind of effect I needed to do, and shook it at a slightly earlier time to get the froth out nice and white.

Fantastic Mark :

How do you like the JJ Palodino(sp?) blend.  Does it compare to Black Cat?

I'm using the JJ Nero blend now, but I do slightly prefer Black Cat.  It's just that it's so expensive with exchange rates and to have it shipped on a regular basis. I'd like to find a similar blend here in Canada.

The new FT blend is blowing my socks off. Big body punch, but good acidity levels (for my taste - I don't like bright espressos).

I wrote about it on the most recent CoffeeKid CafeTalk. In it I said:

Speaking of that cupping guide, yesterday I went to JJ Bean to participate in their weekly Friday Cupping. We cupped an amazing number of coffees - about fifteen, I think. Plus we compared and contrasted Intelligentsia Black Cat to a new 100% organic and Fair Trade espresso blend that JJ will be using in all their locations now.

I'll say two things. First, Black Cat was "on" yesterday - not quite the best it's been, but damned good. But they better be careful. This new Palomino blend from JJ is easily the best espresso I've ever had from the folks at this local roastery. For a long time, they've gone "bright" with their house espresso, which is great in milk, but straight up, it's too bright for my liking. Not any more. Palomino, besides being damned fine in milk, was deep and rich as a straight shot. Loved it

....

Now, trying it at home where I can tweak the brewing, I'm getting even better results.

The fact that it's 100% FT makes it even better. I'd like to see a 100% FT Black Cat one day...

Covered in the cupping guide, on the second last page - check it out Dom.

In short, I describe brightness as a kind of lemon-citrus acidity / tang, but it's not lemon flavoured - it's more the effect the lemon juice would have on your tongue and palatte, not the taste per se. That's extreme "brightness".
