Well, today I did the big photo session for the 2004 Tamper shootout. There's 20 tampers being evaluated (some have multiple pistons - I think there's 16 in the photo below).
Samples from
- Reg Barber - Espresso Parts (last year's contender is being used again) - Impod - Tobira - Thor Tampers - Espro
Are making the roundup this time, with the following groups:
58mm: 12 total 57mm: 2 total 53mm: 4 total 49mm: 2 total
Here's one of the studio shots. This one didn't need retouching (man, do I like those kinda shots... not many fit the bill this time :(
The article should be coming up prior to SCAA Atlanta, depending on how much time I need to compile the judging forms, comments and results.
Quite a selection! I am particularly interested in seeing opinions on the Espro. Are you going to sell or raffle these tampers once you are done with them?
Looking forward to it. I got a EPNW protamp for my shop and it works great but it has been mistreated and is a bit dinged up on the bottom. Maybe it's just about time for me to get my own tamper!
Some Richmond garden gnomes must have broken into the test lab and up an' R-U-N-N-O-F-T with the tampers! Sneaky little buggers, those Richmond gnomes are!
I actually came across this post searching for the term "Tobira". That is the name of the tamper I prefer. It is made in Japan, and although they are a little hard to get in the US right now, I had a friend in Japan buy me one and send it to me.
I can say it is better than the Reg Barber I had, and I thought that was nice. I know it all comes down to preference, but wondered if anyone else has tried the Tobira, or has any interest in it.
Here is the english website, which makes some really convincing arguments for it's design.
