Time for everyone to send psychic sympathy to my wife. She's marooned in New Jersey caring for her mother (who is having more surgical stuff done than I like to think about). To add to the pain (beyond being stuck in New Jersey and having a sick mom) she's separated from our Rituale. I knew this would cause withdrawal pains and so I did a web search to find likely places to go while away from home (which is CA, btw). Found Bucks County Coffee and printed up a list of all their places.

The title line was what she told me today after phoning home. "It smells good when you walk in but as far as taste - forget it. Not even half as good as what you make at home."

And that's the danger of getting into espresso at home. It spoils you. The stuff that used to be "just fine" gets downgraded to "they charge MONEY for this?!"

First, best wishes to your mother in law.  Second, your wife should give up on finding espresso that is as good as yours and instead, take a ride to Seaside Heights for a sausage sandwich on the boardwalk.  BTW, some people live in New Jersey and actually like it.

Will keep your wife and her mom in my prayers hope that all is well.  I too am recovering from more amputation surgery, but even with 1/2 leg and 1/2 of a foot missing I am able to hobble over and get good coffee.  I am sorry that your wife is in NJ.  Grew up in the state and fully realize that coffee is not the forte of the state.  One place that serves up pretty good, the operative word is "pretty" good, is Cooks Corner in Smithville NJ, they do ship if your spouse has the opportunity to grind and brew coffee at her Mom's.  Good luck in everything.

She's in Trenton/Lawrenceville area. Sorry about the implication that nobody would want to be in NJ - simply meant she wants to be home. Actually I spent 25 years in NJ and my wife was there even longer. So we're very conscious of NJ's good and bad points.
(coffee apparently not being one of the good points)

You're right.  NJ is not known for its coffee.  That being said, I must plug a roaster/coffeehouse in Hackettstown, Greene's Beans, that I used before I got into home roasting.  IMHO, Greene's is a quality roaster, committed to excellence, and the coffeehouse has a friendly atmosphere.  But, that doesn't help your wife in Lawrencville.  There's a coffee shop on Bridge Street in Lambertville, which is not too far from Trenton/Lawrencville, that she might enjoy.  Plus, Lambertville and New Hope (across the river), are fun places to visit even if the coffee isn't spectacular.  Hey, it aint the west coast.

hey daktarz,

As we chatted about in a previous thread sometime ago, if she's in Trenton/Lawrenceville, she's just a hop, skip, and a . . . well, you know from P'ton.  Of course, not during peak traffic times, but anyway.

Small World on Witherspoon.  I'm thinking it really hard while looking North and slightly East (that's where Jersey is relative to me).

Been to NY once.  Spent 24 hours in Manhattan.  Loved it.  Drove home through Joisey.  From what I know, it's like NY only cheaper.  What's not to like about that?

But then again, I come from Dayton, a town so lame, that every so often I get excited by the occasional cool thing that happens here.  Such as last summer when Sheryl Crow played a concert at our local "Fraze Pavilion" and made a DVD of it. If you look at the link, you'll see the type of acts that Dayton draws.  Nothing mega-huge like Springsteen.

But I digress from the topic.  I think that in this life, there are the really hip places, and then there's everything else.  If you can see the NY skyline but you're not in NY, it's understandable why the reputation of Jersey is less than perfect.

Dayton is home to many famous inventors, from the Wright Brothers, to the guys who invented cash registers, credit cards, pop can tops, UPC barcodes, etc.  But the fact is, every one of them was able to make a fortune and get the he!! outta here.

As long as there's a good source of coffee beans nearby, most of us will be set.  It's just that when you cross the country and you're in a place you know nothing about, you may have plenty of choices, but few worth it.

Daktarz, hope your wife has a safe trip.  You all have our condolances and prayers for her mother's speedy recovery.  Even if we don't know the people involved, surgery is no picnic for anyone.

D-
My sister lives in Lawrenceville (but she's not really a geek) but I asked and this is what she wrote back

=====
Fedelo's on Main Street is great. nice ambiance too. What exactly are they looking for, there is also Barnes and Noble Bookstore. The starbucks in Lawrence is not nice.
=====

Looks like Fedelo may be worth a try, if you're looking for espresso in NJ the Italian delis sometimes are a good bet.

Thanks for the well wishes and tips. I just finished reading all the posts to my wife (no internet in Mom-in-Law's house). She loved them and will check out the coffee spots.
