Yes go for the best coffee, so you tried both the fast flowing and the "normal" flowing shots and liked the faster flowing ones best?

Maybe I'm a bit slow, but it sounds to me like his flow is fine, but he likes to stop his extraction sooner than most people.  So be it!  He's the one who's drinking it, so it's his choice when to kill the shot.

I love to get a slow shot, one that oozes like honey and is a hazelnut colour, the crema has beautiful tiger stripes spanned across it surface. If it is to fast I tend to ditch that shot and keep pulling till I get the right shot.

If the crema dissipates fast I trash it even if the shots right.
