I have lattes twice a day whether at home or on the road. Either way I buy coffee out quite a bit. I have two excellent shops that just opened in my neighborhood and before that I had been frequenting a shop that was in my former neighborhood. I still frequent the shop in my former neighborhood as it's still my favorite in my city.

I always research coffee shops before traveling and have rarely had bad experiences. In some cases there just are not any good options (usually out in the middle of nowhere on a road trip) and I'm stuck settling but nearly every major city seems to have several good coffee shops these days. Without planning I'm sure my experiences would be similar to your own. Just randomly hitting coffee shops or trying coffee at restaurants, etc is certain to lead to a lot of disappointment unless you're just not picky about coffee.
