"The whole purpose of places like Starbuck's is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don't know what the hell they're doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino."

Before you completely dismiss Starbucks, you need to get a half pound of their Pikes Place beans and pull yourself an espresso shot from them at home. I've got one in front of me right now. It's quite good. Pikes Place is one of their medium roasts and since they over roast everything, it actually comes out correct for espresso. I discovered this fact by accident when in an airport and in desperation asked for a shot of espresso with an ounce of water (to help with the expected bitterness). I was floored with the taste and went back to ask what beans they'd used. Turns out, since it was an airport affiliate, they didn't have to use the corporate mandated espresso roast used at the regular stores and had used Pikes Place. And when I tried it myself - a win. Shocking but true.
