Am I crazy?

Not at all.  I'd say you're crazy for expecting good espresso from a Nespresso and a superauto.  Convenient?  Yes.  Good?  No.

Of course, whether or not one is happy with what's in the cup is all that matters in the end.  Plenty of people are very happy with their Nespressos, superautos, etc.  However, they're placing convenience as a priority above all else and they're willing to compromise on the other aspects of espresso.

Is this finally going to produce the same quality of espresso as the average coffee bar, or am I going to be disappointed and be told I need a GS/3 to get what I'm looking for (which is way out of my price range)

The "average coffee bar" is a very low bar that is easily jumped with relatively inexpensive equipment.  My Silvia and Rocky easily surpassed the majority of coffee shops in my area when I bought them.  However, things have changed over the past decade and we have a number of very good coffee shops in this city.  Even so, my equipment is still able to surpass most coffee shops in my area.

All that said, equipment is just one link in the chain and the chain is only as strong as its weakest link.  The beans, the grind, the dose, the skill of the operator, etc are all important as well.  The best equipment in unskilled hands is easily beaten by entry level equipment in very skilled hands.  People frequently overlook skill for the shiny toys.

It's unlike me to go from a more expensive appliance to a cheaper one. If the flat burr K8 was as much as or more than the conical k10, I'd find it reassuringly expensive and it would be a no brainer :)

Price is always just price.   Don't assume anything based solely on price no matter what the topic.
