A few of the cafés I've been to recently on my university's campus have been botching doppios - even my old favourite one and one which was touted as being the best on campus. What they do is add water first, then extract the doppio into an espresso cup, creating a mini long black, and making it taste more like filter coffee and less like espresso. Why?! "Doppio" is Italian for double! It's literally just a double shot! I don't want it topped up with water, diminishing the richness! I'm not sure if it's just bad training or bad baristas, but whenever I get that I stop ordering shots from them. The good coffee places in Brisbane make them properly though, so I'm not sure why some baristas have this misconception.

i feel your frustration. it certainly is not good to get a not so good tasting coffee. have you tried to talk to their manager? see if that is really the way it should be?

This might be a stupid question, but wouldn't it be easier just to order a double shot of espresso? How many can f*** that order up?
I know, they are supposed to know, but when they apparently don't...

I just checked your profile and your in Australia...it's a pity, because had you been in Texas, you could have used one of Edisons more shocking inventions on them, or at least threatened to..

Yeah, I posted it on Facebook, and the owner replied within an hour, apologising and saying she was upset that had happened. I mean, they've got a top quality set up (a La Marzocco Linea Classic, two Mazzer Macinacaffe grinders and two single origins), but because of it's location, staff turn over is so high and the good baristas get stolen by Merlo about 200m away.

Yeah, I might have to star doing that - good suggestion! Either that or just going back to order singles. I'm amazed that when they remake it, it still tastes terrible. I suspect they must either be over or underdosing, locking the portafilter and waiting too long before exracting, not tamping right or not checking the grind throughout the day, as the machine is a semi-auto, so they can't be getting the length of pour wrong.

Well, I don't know. Thomas Alva Edison did invent the electric chair, though.
