Posted Sat Jul 31, 2004, 9:02pm Subject: Olympic Latte Art Challenge (until last day of Athens Olympics)
Okay, all you latte art specialists out there! The olympics are upon us, and while the Free-pour isn't yet an Olympic event, it doesn't stop us coffeegeeks from pretending.
So I propose this:
any CGer, barista, or other espresso enthusiast, must creatively interpret "the Olympics or the Olympic movement" using the following criteria:
A:
-free poured latte art
or
-free poured latte art and etching, without having etching exceed 50% of the comprised milk surface.
B:
-use the milk, espresso blend and cup size of their choice, up to 16oz maximum.
______________________________________________
Competition submission deadline: August 13 (day of Opening Ceremonies).
The judges initial suggestion for entries is two rosettas, in the arrangement of the Olympic's Laurel wreath as seen in the Athens 2004 emblem. Entrants are free to add additional details to this pattern, or may interpret the olympics in another fashion.
To the victor will go one pound of Hines Espresso Blend. Other prizes for silver and bronze to be determined later and in addition, if enough competition entries are submitted, the gold winner's prize may be increased. But really, this competition is really about fame and glory, and advancing the art form.
All entries may be posted here, in photographic format or emailed to me at jimmy(at)onecycling.ca. Each entrant may post a maximum of 13 entries, with no more than one per day.
By submitting your entry, I ask that I may post those photos on my website, for viewing after competition close, August 11. Note: Hines Public Market Coffee does not endorse this contest; their coffee is offered as a prize, by myself, the competition organizer. Entries that exhibit manual or computer photo enhancing, as deemed by the competition organizer, a veteran user of Adobe Photoshop, will be disqualified at the organizer's discretion. In the case of a tie, organizer may ask for an impartial second party to break the tie. In the case of a 2 or 3 way tie, prizes will be split in an equal fashion. Fair play, in the spirit of the Olympic games, will be encouraged.

No, it's not!! Well, at least not in cycling. It recently got moved off the list in the UCI.
I still can't believe that sprinter from the small carribean country who won the gold, then lost it at the PanAm games for caffeine levels. She apparently would have had to drink 2 gallons of coffee (or something like that) to have had the levels she did in her blood. Can you say caffeine pills??!!

I thought I'd better get this thread movin in the art direction. The right side rosetta turned out just right for the wreath style i'm lookin for, as the left side was to spread out and dreamy. First attempt at gold baby!

Ooooooo, a contest, and a really tough one! I have never attempted to pour a double rosettas before, and I see Latt3rt has already set the bar pretty high. Can’t wait to see other Top Guns showing off with their Laurel Wreath Art! Is there any way that we can contact Luigi, and have him do it blindfold?

Sweet, well by default, Latte3rt Steve is currently in first place. Ron, even, though it's all etched, we'll let this one slide, and say, 2nd place. Maybe the Queen of multiart might see this thread... Bronwen? LOL, if she won, I could have the beans very directly shipped to her!
Actually, in theory one could do a rosetta, then do the olympics rings using etching techniques.
Update: as of right now, I'm changing the prizes: winner gets 1 lb of hines, Black Cat or Vivace dolce or vita, plus 1/2 lb of Kaldi Coffee espresso; silver gets one 1/2lb bag of their choosing of the above three, plus 1/2 lb of Kaldi Coffee espresso; bronze gets 1/2lb of Kaldi Coffee espresso.
Kaldi is roasted in Saskatoon by a Lebanese man who won an award awhile back in Germany for best espresso blend for taste and quality. His blend is sweetly complex, much like Vita.
I may try to get a RegBarber tamper with some sort of LATTE ART CHAMPION and olympic insignia for the overall winner if we can get enough entrants.

I came home this afternoon, giving Jimmy's challenge a try. It was a failure (ran out of steamed milk in the pitcher at the very end), but I got some ideas here, and I would like to share with everyone.
Working on the Laurel Wreath Art, I found Luigi's clip from Thomas' blog of July 3rd very helpful. Especially with the pitcher close to the cup, which makes the Rosetta tight.
As for the Olympic insignia, I tried to "stamp" the rings using the bottle cap as the stamper, and microfoam as the ink, but it didn't work too well. I think using the squeeze bottle will do the job, but Jimmy may disqualify us for doing it. : )
Well, I will try again tomorrow, and good luck everybody...
