dremel tool? really? because i just got one as a wedding gift and haven't had much of a chance to play with it, but i'm having trouble finding a source for a gaggia bottomless PF, so if there's a link to directions with a dremel for cutting one of these babies, please share!

um.. er.. no directions necessary. Just hack the bottom of it out, use a grinder attachment to smooth it out, and you're done. I'll be doing it in a few days myself.
I haven't heard of anyone selling, so I guess we FF!'ers have to bring out the tools to get one. Noll (twomartinis) has made one using a Dremel I think.
Is there anyone out there offering a service to modify peoples' portafilters? This looks like it would be extremely easy to do on a milling machine (like the one my dad has ;-). It would give a better appearance and finish than using a dremel.
I guess if anyone wants to try it and has a spare PF hanging around, send me a message and I'd be willing try my hand machining one.

actually, i emailed espressoparts.com last night about my Gaggia Carezza, and they replied today that they don't do them because of the design of the Gaggia's PF - it's apparently thin enough at the metal where the handle meets the base, that it risks breaking over time.
me, i think i'll order a second portafilter for mine and just dremel it. :)

Check the Buying and Selling forum. There's one for sale. I was going to make an offer, but I'm about broke right now, and I was planning to dremel mine in a few days anyway.

I have a FF! X3. This portafilter (link below) looks ideal for modification to a naked portafilter. Except that the measurment seems wrong. I bought my X3 on ebay (new) about a year ago, so I guess it is an older one since my inner PF diameter is more like 58mm. I only say "older" because of the description of this PF on WLL.

Nathan apparently looked at him like his boss was on drugs :) :)
(btw, one of ESI's crew (John B?) apparently did this to a portafilter some years back, but didn't share the espronography with the public - shame shame!!!!! :) :) :))
Neway, I've reserved comment on it till now, and I'm still kinda reserving comment until I do some of my own testing. But Hopkin lent me one of his naked portafilters for the weekend, and on Monday, I'm going to get one of mine hacked down (my LM portafilters are a slightly different design than Hopkins' more recent models).
But for now, here's a high res shot of what all the excitement is about.
Today is August 20, 2007. The three year anniversary of Mark's post introducing most of us to the naked PF. Can't believe it has been three years already. The "Look Out JonR!!!!!" thread didn't start till more than six months later on feb 25, 2005. That's when coffeegeeks could order a naked PF and didn't have to do their own PF surgery anymore. I've been using the naked PF since November 2004. Here are some pics I took over the past three days of double 1oz ristrettos pulled with the Coffee Klatch WBC competition blend. The bottom of the cup is sweet and winey. Almost like there is alcohol in the espresso.
What a great thread. I've been reading this forum for about a year now, and I never found this thread. It is really interesting to read, how the development of the naked PF took place! And just a few days after I posted my first picture in the "Look out JonR" thread :)
