I got clued into this last night: the January 2005 issue of National Geographic has a wonderful piece of latte art on the cover with the title "Why we love caffeine." There's also a couple articles on coffee farming and modern coffee culture inside. Y'all should check it out!

I have to say, the shot on the cover is really nice. I couldn't stop staring at it for a while. I was wondering who poured it...

Check out the animation of a rosetta pour (click next to see the animation). It's six frames or so. Very cool - even better looking than the pour on the cover, though the initial shot was looking a bit anemic on the crema.

Hey Steve!  Yes, the Alessi is a real nice steam pitcher.   I've had mine(17oz), for about 2 weeks now.  This thing is solid and much heavier than my basic straight walled 20oz pitcher.   It tends to get the milk swirling better than my 20 oz, whereas things can get outta hand with my little 12 oz.   Only problem is, I'm still trying to get used to pouring rosettas with this thing.  Who knows, maybe I'm  in one of those  latte art slumps,  that just happened to start on the day after I got the Alessi ; )   Hmmmm.....maybe I should pick up some of that ultra-pasteurized organic milk.

Hi Chris!

Glad to see your post! I have been longing to have one of these Alessi pitchers.  Maybe, and just maybe I’ll buy one as a Christmas gift for myself.

I am not sure which size to go with 17oz or 25.5oz,  but most likely I will follow your lead, and get a 17 oz-er (if I have the courage to pull the trigger and place the purchase order. LOL)

I am not doing too well the art either.  Got art, but not presentable for here.  Not the milk, can’t blame the happy cows.

Hope to see some of your art soon.

Cheers,

Steve

So I took the little "coffee" quiz, and as a reward for getting 70% correct, I get a wallpaper of a tea plantation...

Chris,

Just ordered a 17 oz-er.  Thank you for the info!

Happy holidays...

Steve

======edited on 12/23/04=========

Just got mine in the mail today.  You are right, this baby is SOLID, and its design sure makes the milk spinning easier. The foam it yields is excellent.

My first pour was so-so at best.  The flow felt different from the straight walled pitcher, and the pour didn't go as I anticipated from the straight walled one.   I guess we just need to get used to its characteristics.

In any case, thanks for the buying tip, and I have to say, it is a beauty!

Cheers,

Steve
