I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem. My machine is about a year old and I keep it very clean. I get my espresso beans from Barrington Roasters. I've got no problem pulling a 25 second, 2 oz. shot of their regular beans at around the 3 setting on the Rocky--the decaf beans require me to go down to negative territory (usually a minus 1 or 2) at which point the blades noisily grind into one another. But it's the only way I can get the beans to pull a good shot (I've got a Silvia). I've asked 1st Sales and they're basically stumped (they warned me that using the machine at this setting will ultimately damage it) as is Barrington Roasters. What surprises me is that the Rocky can't grind superfine without damage.  Any suggestions?

I just purchased a Rocky Doserless, and have been questioning whether to keep or not. I know this grinder is highly regarded, but I was very dissapointed on the fit and finish quality when I pulled it from the box. The edges on the black peice look like they were finished by a 5 year old kid with a hacksaw.

As for the grinding, I am at 5/6 up from the "true zero" setting with my Gaggia Coffee. I am worried that as the burrs wear down, I will have to dial it down closer to the zero setting. (I am assuming this is what you are experiencing).

Anyone out there with older Rocky's that can help us out and share their experience?

Hi Yaseen,

Welcome to the Coffeegeek forums! {:-)

Yes the fit & finish can leave a lot to be desired..

I have a Rancilio Rocky SS doser model that's 5 years 9 months old. I didn't replace my burrs till 5½ years, & I was grinding @ a +4 or +3., so there is precious little room left for adjustment. It all depends on how much coffee you go through, & if you're grinding primarily at an espresso grind., they'll wear out faster.

Every grinder is different, but my "true" or dynamic zero was a +1 & I ground @ +11 or so for Miss Silvia., so a true +10.

I think your grind # should be higher. If you search my posts, you'll see I've written a fair bit on the Rocky. {;-)

Decaf beans do require a finer grind, as do a few quirky well known commercial espresso blends. The Rocky can and does grind very fine, I can choke/stall my machine if I want., & I grind for Turkish coffee also without the burrs touching/rubbing together.

I guess the question is, since clearly I need to grind at absolute zero in order to be able to make the decaf espresso pull properly, what should I do about it? Risk damaging the machine in order to get a proper pull off the only decaf espresso I've found that I like? Is there any kind of re-calibration that can be done?  Oddly enough, my $75 Starbucks grinder can grind these beans with no problem, and with plenty of room to go much much finer.

No, don't risk damaging the machine., which it won't unless you really mash the two burrs together. Is the Rocky out of warranty? There is a flat triangular area at the top of both burrs that will touch & not the cutting area of the burrs.

Have you ever had the upper burr carrier out to clean it & the mating surface area for the upper burr? Have you ever cleaned out the bottom burr & mounting area?

How many lbs of coffee have you put through the grinder approximately?

Brian, email me your contact info/phone # & I'll respond back right now with mine if you'd like & phone you about the grinder. Too much to type out in posts that I've covered before & trying to link to, that I can describe much easier to you on a voip phone call. {:-)

Brian,

I'll phone you so that way it's no cost to you. {:-D

My email address is "munged"/altered to be a spam trap. You have to take out the deletethis. manually to make it work Brian, sorry. I'd either add this in to yours above, or delete it., so you won't get tons of spam..

There are spam bots/spiders that crawl the internet lookin' for this type of thing to harvest. {:-(
