Subject: GRINDZ or RICE?

Hey all!

I was using Urnex Grinz product to clean my grinder, but switched to white rice recently. Is there a large difference in how well the product cleans the grinder assuming you use the product once a week? I use my grinder everyday so I try to keep it clean and open it up every few weeks to try and really clean it out.

Thanks!

I have heard not to use regular rice but that instant rice is OK.

I occasionly use the instant white rice but for the most part just vacuum and brush out my Rocky and Pro-line

I thought I read it was bad to use rice. I think a good trhinkg about the GRINDZ is that it is designed to clean the entire grinder well and get rid of nasty oil deposits. No other way to do that...

Rich,

Opinions vary on this topic ... below is what I do.  It is good that you recognize that regular and frequent cleaning of the grinder is essential to great coffee!

I use INSTANT rice (not the same as white rice) in my Mazzer Mini as part of my weekly and intensive (~once per month) cleaning program.  The reason I use the instant rice is because it is much more absorbent of the oils and such.  If I don't have time to disassemble the grinder, then I run some instant rice through the grinder and then vacuum it out.

I have never used Grindz and as such, I do not knock the product; others have used it and like the results.  The instant rice is a readily accessible and cost-effective option for me.

I hope this helps ...

Respectfully,

Thanks, I'll try the instant rice becaus eit is so much cheaper than the Grindz. I think it is an essential step aside form disassembling the grinder. The rice or Grindz is the only way to remove oils.

I believe the reason that instant rice is recommended over normal rice is that it is softer because it has already been partially cooked.

Softer and better absorbtion. However, does it do as good a job?

I used Grindz for the 1st time yesterday & it really did clean out all old deposits.
It's not cheap, & I only grind about 28 grams of coffee a day, so I only plan on using it once every 2 or 3 weeks, as opposed to the manufacturers recommendation of once a week.

I wanted to clean out my old hand grinder with rice but in the local shop here I only had the choice between 'normal rice' or 'minute rice'.

I thought minute rice was the one that every body meant but when I opened the pot it's nearly as soft as fully cooked rice.  This isn't right is it?  Surely it would just turn to mush inside?

Anybody know of anything else you can find in the grocery store that would work?

Thanks, Claire
