Subject: Slippery Mazzer Mini ... any advice?

I've owned my mazzer mini for a couple of years now, and I'm still as in love as the day I first got it ... except for this!

Whenever I'm thwacking the dosing lever, the grinder slips on the bench! To try and stop it from slipping all over the place, I extend the forefinger of the hand that is holding the portafilter, so hold the grinder still by touching the portafilter fork.

I've tried blu-tac, but that doesn't stick well to stainless steel (my bench is s/s). Any other tips? Gaffa Tape? Super Glue? Bolt it to the bench? Upgrade to a Robur ;-) ?

Also, has anyone removed the portafilter fork thingy on the front? I find that if I could hold the portafilter closer to the doser, to the left and at a slight angle, I'd waste less coffee.

Woodworking supply shops sell a rubber like pad to hold wood while routing, I have tried it & it really grabs onto just about anything, If you have a "WOODCRAFT" store near you they can help

I say go for the Robur!

But in all seriousness, I use a nice big wooden cutting board that has rubber non-slip "feet" and that seems to really do the trick. I'm sorry this picture doesn't show it better but if you look CLOSE you'll see the reflection of the feet on the bench

Hi Jon,

I really like the funnel on your big Mazzer.  Is that standard for a doserless Mazzer or is that your creation?

If I can find a Tagex Mazzer like that which I can afford, my Rocky will be for sale.

Phil

It is really funny that you brought this up. I have had my Mazzer Mini since January and I find exactly the same thing happens. I currently have Formica countertops which are coming out today to be replaced with Granite. If the problem continues I am going to try the rubber non-skid pads made for keeping devices from slipping. They are readily available in hardware and variety stores.

I had a similar experience with my Macap M4.  I now keep it on top of a 6"x8" tamping mat which keeps it in place and also dampens the noise when I lift up the front ~1/2" and drop it (I have the doserless).

Hi Phil,

Thanks!  Actually, the black Mazzer is an ebay-Tagex that I converted to doserless using an OEM Mazzer Funnel (the conversion requires a few other parts as well, and I purchased the whole conversion kit from EPNW for about $150).

Hello Jon, I've been thinking about modding out my Mazzer SJ with this kit.  I emailed the vendor and this kit doesn't come with any instructions.  Was it difficult taking the doser apart and installing the funnel kit?  I hate the doser on the SJ.  It's difficult to clean and isn't very practical for a few shots a day that I pull.

Hi Mike,
It's an easy modification....the doser comes off whole and doesn't need to be disassembled itself.  You will have to drill two small pilot holes for the screws to hold the backing plate but that's pretty easy too.

As for the Super-J doser, it's very easy to modify to make it MUCH more convenient.  All you need is some electrical tape, some pipecleaners, an index card, and about an hour of free time. You might want to try it before spending the $150 on the doserless funnel which itself is not a perfect solution either.
