After seeing the "Titan grinder Project" and it's offshoot thread "Beat the Robur" over at H-B I ended up with a bad case of upgrade fever.  After quite a bit of searching and researching and asking some folks whose opinions I place alot of faith in I finally decided on the Macap MK7R from ChrisCoffee.

Here it sets on the coffeebar, next to my modified (cut-down hopper + doserless) mazzer Super Jolly.

Now for sure I gotta come up with a better hopper, but this functions well for the moment.
The green cup fits snugly and has the bottom cut out, the red cup holds the beans in (this baby popcorns bigtime)

Anyone got suggestions for a short but elegant hopper?

It starts up kinda loudly, so I put this padding underneath to soften the vibration (it works pretty well!)

And here is the whole reason to have a grinder like this - the pour.
The Macap was so easy to dial in that the very first shot poured GREAT.
One quick little grind test and one adjustment and then I tried pulling a shot with the camera on it.

And after a little tweaking I was getting pours like this one, every time.
Folks - here's living proof that the grinder is more important than the machine   :-))

Jon that looks great.

Now the question I want answered: How does the Macap compare to your Mazzer Super Jolly?

Your pour looks great but I don't have too much trouble getting something similar from my Mazzer most of the time.  I still need practice but does the Macap really outshine your Mazzer?  Has the espresso taste improved, if so how much?

And yes when you decide that you don't want the conical anymore you can ship it to my house...

..why are you laughing?

I plan to try them out head-to-head when I get them both dialed in on the same blend...once I can bring myself to use the super-Jolly again :-)
(Since the Macap has been here I have not used the Super-J)

I have not compared the taste yet, but I can say that the pours quality is amazing.  It is MUCH easier to get a smooth and beautiful pour with the big conical. The pours are instant-on and well-centered every time and the extractions are amazing.

And it seems like it just doesn't blonde.  In the video, the shot was pouring for ~30 seconds before the first HINT of blonding.

Can I make a nice pour with the Super-Jolly?
Sure I can....but it takes much more care to get anything close to what the macap does almost effortlessly.

The results you're describing aren't too difficult for me to achieve on my SJ.  I don't know how it could be much easier on the Macap.

However, some of the things I'd be interested to know:

What is the sensativity of the adjustment?
For instance, a relatively small movement to the ring on the SJ makes a significant difference in the shot.  Is this tendancy more so or less so with the MK7R?

Although it's hard to tell from the pictures, it looks as if you're using a triple basket (as do I most of the time).  Given the coffee I like to use, it's difficult for me to achieve a quality true double (2.5-3 oz) with a regular double basket, although I can pour some decent ristrettos with a double basket.  I'd be interested in knowing how well the MK7R performs with a double basket (and/or a Synesso basket) pouring true doubles compared to the SJ.

The advent of the triple basket just made life easier (and more forgiving) for many of us.  I would think the best test of the MK7R would be how it performs with lower doses compared to the SJ.

Trust me, it is  :-)
But I do plan to get into some head-to-head shots soon....

The worm gear drive is more precise, and it seems to take more motion for smaller changes in burr separation.

The shot in the picture and the video were both made with the "Synesso" 18g basket

A "true double" for me is 2 ounces, I never shoot for more than that.

I dialed in the 12g normal double basket yesterday afternoon, it was an adjustment of about 3 full turns of the worm drive. I'll be running normale shots for a few days so I'll be able to attest to shot volume from lower doses (and I'm sure I'll post here in a little while - after I've had my morning coffee :-))
