Subject: clean a burr grinder with rice?

Somewhere in the distant past, I seem to remember a tip for cleaning a burr grinder by running rice through it. Is there any truth to this?

I have a Saeco grinder that I clean every month or so by taking it apart and scraping and vacuuming it out, but I can never get into the corners where all the oily gunk accumulates.

Will running some rice through get rid of this stuff, or will I just wind up with rice flour stuck to all the oily bits?

Thanks.

I use instant rice all the time followed by brushing and vacuuming.
If you do use it make sure it's instant.  Instant is significantly easier to fracture and grind than regular rice.
Regular rice, or cooked rice may damage your grinder.

Cheers,

Probably just rice flour stuck to the gunk....sorry, but hey, give it a shot and find out.  (Use Minute Rice, BTW, not uncooked plain rice)

I use Minute Rice in mine after the toothbrush, shish kabob skewer scrape for what it's worth.  I like the way it makes the burrs look bright and shiny.  Also I believe it helps absorb residual oil, etc, but I don't believe it's abrasive enough to clean the nooks and crannies.

Good Luck

Worked like a charm. As much as I hated the idea of pouring a Kraft product into my grinder, a couple of passes & it came out clean.

Thanks.
