I tried to follow the recalibration instructions, however, when getting to absolute zero, turning it on the burr started and came to a 'grinding' stop. . Now I think the motor is blown. Has this happen to you?
Yes, I did the same thing to my old MDF once. Took it apart for cleaning, put it back together, turned it on, and the motor immediately locked up and started smoking. I turned it off right away of course, but the damage was done. After that, it still worked but the motor made high pitched screeching noises whenever it was on, even when it wasn't under load. Ouch.
You might be able to send it to a technician for a rebuild if the motor is truly damaged, but I'm not sure it's worth the cost. You could probably buy a new grinder for the cost of the repairs.
Thank you for sharing that information. When I checked with WLL about the problem, they reminded me that the MDF was out of warranty by 2 months. When asked if they had experience with this problem... the reply "yes, once when a customer's house was hit by lightening and caused a power-surge'. I should have used that one. Actually, the re-calibration instructions are ambiquious. Instructions that have 'listen to a whirl and tighten to 'snug' are a problem. Obviously for me. The good news: The MDF was purchased with a cc that provides an extended warranty. Looks like I'll get a replacement.
