I came across a page with an ugly, overcomplicated mod to make it stepless today.
I did a quick search, and apparently many people have dreamed up various ugly, overcomplicated mods.

I thought I'd share my version with you, I did it maybe 5 years ago, and don't remember if it was my idea or something I read.

1) Unscrew the hopper / top burr carrier and remove it.

2) wrap lots of teflon tape around the thread.

3) Replace hopper

You have to use lots of tape.

Enjoy.

Hi. You're a Kiwi too right? What kind of tape have you used on your Rocky and where did you get it? I have a Rocky but haven't yet investigated this mod. People talk about Teflon tape but I've yet to see any tape in a hardware store that was labeled as such. Please forgive my ignorance.
Cheers.

It's done the rounds (search on Rocky+Teflon+Tape+Modification). The earliest mention I found was on alt.coffee (I searched on thread+slop and found references dating back to 2003). I wonder why Rancilio has never fixed this problem...

Another common name is "Plumber's tape" because it's used to seal pipe thread. Look for a blue spool with white cover in the plumbing aisle.

alt.coffee sounds about right, I used to lurk there around that time.

I am indeed a kiwi, just working in America for a year or so.
go to the plumbing section of mitre 10. It's that white non-sticky tape that you wrap around threads to seal them.

I'm guessing rancilio don't fix it cos it would probably push the price up towards the mazzer mini level, and then it wouldn't be worth buying.
