I own a Rocky that is having some problems....it won't grind.        I can get it to grind some on a very large grind setting, but when I try to grind on a finer setting, nothing comes out and all I can hear are the burrs spinning.

Is this indicative of something serious or just a Rocky in need a good cleaning?  If it is a good cleaning, any recs?

Todd

Sounds like you may just need a good cleaning if the burrs still spin, but no grinding occurs.  Maybe there are weeks (months, years?) of crud blocking the beans from reaching the burrs.

Just remove the top three screws in the hopper, pull off the finger guard (if it's still there).  Pull off the hopper, and just unscrew the top brass assembly.  This will give you access to clean it out.

I also removed the safety screw on the bottom side of the bean hopper before assembling it, the one that doesn't let you set the value to less than zero.  Once this screw is removed and everything is re-assembled, you'll find that you can just unscrew the whole hopper/upper burr carrier assembly without needing to remove any screws.  Just hold down the finger tab and unscrew, and vice versa to put it back on.

Hope that makes sense?

Have you seen this write-up from Mark Prince, the head coffee geek himself:

How to Clean a Rancilio Rocky

If you don't have a doser, you can ignore that part.

Good luck!
Larry.
